Overview

In the version quoted by Alcebíades Costa Filho from Bastos, Crispim is the son of a widow living beside the Poti. After a failed fishing trip, he argues with her and strikes her with a cattle bone. Before dying she condemns him to live as a fish beneath the water, with release dependent on devouring seven virgins named Maria at seven-year intervals. A Teresina municipal account describes the enlarged, gourd-shaped head that gives Cabeça de Cuia his name. Its account instead describes a sexual condition for release, a difference that should remain visible rather than be blended into the quoted version.

A 2023 legislative proposal reproduces older descriptions through Câmara Cascudo. One attributed to Freitas describes an unseen-bodied, gourd-headed river assailant approaching bathers at night. Another attributed to Vale Cabral depicts a tall, thin, long-haired being, more active during floods, with a forty-nine-year curse. The proposal is a modern transmission of those descriptions. Contemporary authors also revise the narrative deliberately: the municipality documented Célia Revilândia Costa Seabra's 2021 children's book Crispim, o menino do rio, presented as an adaptation removing violence and challenging its treatment of women. The older story and that authored revision serve different audiences.

Origins & earliest records

Costa Filho's 2010 thesis quotes Bastos 1994, page 94; its own passage is printed page 16. The 2023 proposal transmits accounts attributed to Freitas and Vale Cabral in 1884 through Cascudo's 2001 edition. Those older editions were not directly inspected. Their reported dates establish a textual trail, not an exact first oral telling.

Records & interpretation

Three inspected witnesses support distinct claims: the thesis's attributed tale, the proposal's historical quotations and Teresina's 18 March 2021 announcement of an adaptation. The proposal's spelling of Freitas's name is inconsistent with other bibliography, so his original edition is left unverified. A proposed heritage measure is not described here as an enacted law.
