Overview
Bosmer are the Wood Elves of Valenwood, appearing among Arena's playable peoples and continuing in later games. Skyrim's character description emphasises archery, scouting, resistance to poison and disease, and a temporary ability to command an animal. Those are selected gameplay capabilities, rather than an exhaustive account of an individual's occupation or convictions. The later cultural texts place the people within a religious landscape and a negotiated political alliance.
The Green Pact and the Dominion presents a Wood Elf argument about obligations to Y'ffre. It describes protecting the forest, avoiding plant food, consuming defeated enemies rather than wasting them, and preserving the Wood Elf form instead of changing into beasts. Its author also recounts a gift allowing requests for the forest to shape itself into shelter. The text's immediate problem is political: Altmer and Khajiiti allies use timber and eat plants. Marbruk's construction causes disagreement even when materials are imported, and Treethane Fariel is praised for defending Bosmeri interests while accommodating allies. The Green Lady and Silvenar represent the people at the alliance's foundation. This is a partisan appeal for cooperation, not evidence that every Bosmer accepts the same compromise.
Karkuxor's religious survey gives Y'ffre special importance and describes the Storyteller establishing stable natural forms after primordial change. It also includes gods concerned with burial, ancestry and payment or retribution, showing that forest reverence is not the entire pantheon. Official Online support expressly limits the Green Pact's automatic behavioural consequences to devout non-player Wood Elves: a player decides how to observe it. The distinction matters when comparing narrated religious obligations with what a playable character can actually gather, eat or do.
First appearances & development
Wood Elves are playable in Arena (1994), and Skyrim supplies a later selected character description. Online (2014) develops the Second Era Dominion and its internal debates through in-world books. This account does not turn a religious origin story into a documented biological transformation or silently merge different gameplay ability systems.
Canon & continuity
Complete reproductions of The Green Pact and the Dominion and Karkuxor's Wood Elf survey were inspected, together with the official Green Pact support answer and selected game-reference descriptions. The alliance essay advocates a position. Its account of disputed accommodation remains attributed, while support distinguishes non-player observance from player choice.
