Overview

Blastocladiella emersonii alternates between swimming zoospores and attached rhizoid-bearing growth with sporangia. The 2022 study used Pennsylvania pond isolate ATCC 22665, a research accession, not a newly designated type.

Its 34.27 Mb assembly comprises 21 contigs and 10,031 candidate genes. Telomere-like motifs suggest at least six chromosomes; completeness estimates vary, despite strong expressed-sequence matching.

Predicted sensory proteins include cyclases and membrane-associated receptors. A previously investigated rhodopsin-cyclase fusion links light with chemical signaling; additional candidates remain unvalidated. Ribosomal phylogeny supports Blastocladiomycota placement and sampled-genus paraphyly, not direct ancestry.
