Overview

The island's inhuman inhabitants have great height, talonlike nails and a constructed ritual court. Their apparently silent instrument compels a captive, whose immersion in a green pool produces a small hardened likeness. Conan sees a dead inhabitant undergo a similar contraction.

The final battle ends with the leader entering the pool and an eruption forcing the sailors to retreat. The story does not explain that reaction or supply a complete religion. These are deliberately fictional beings; their appearance and the tale's title do not identify a real population.
