Overview
Biwa-bokuboku is an animated biwa, the short-necked Japanese lute, represented by Sekien as a humanlike figure whose instrument supplies its head. The combination lets a familiar crafted object occupy the social world of dress and movement. It belongs to the repertoire of utensil and instrument yōkai collected in Hyakki Tsurezure Bukuro, where everyday possessions acquire expressive bodies rather than remaining passive tools.
Later descriptions emphasize music, dancing or resentment at being neglected. These are useful associations, but should not be treated as a compulsory biography shared by every animated instrument. The National Diet Library directly compares Sekien's biwa and koto figures with earlier object processions. That comparison gives a material visual history without requiring a literal hundred-year transformation rule. This entry keeps the biwa's identifiable form central and distinguishes its particular image from the broader tsukumogami category.
