Ayakashi, named plate by Toriyama Sekien

Printed label あやかし and the pictured composition directly inspected at enlarged resolution. Sekien illustrates Ayakashi as a long, patterned sea creature bending over a small boat. The exact image URL comes from the returned IIIF manifest, not a guessed page ID.

Overview

Ayakashi appears in this plate as an enormous elongated creature moving through choppy water. Its body rises in several arches and passes across a small roofed boat. Dense spotted or scale-like markings distinguish it from the waves, which are drawn with long repeated curves. A small head near the top and the body’s extended course establish an impression of exceptional length.

The printed heading あやかし names this particular marine representation. A reader can compare the boat and body directly to understand the imagined scale without assigning an unsupported numerical measurement. The term has broader supernatural uses, so the illustrated form should not define every occurrence of the word. The page supports a sea creature and threatened vessel setting; popular accounts of oil, endurance or a precise crossing duration need separate textual verification.
