Overview

Zhuru inhabits Mount Geng in the Shanhaijing’s second eastern itinerary. Its body resembles a fox, but its wings are compared with those of a fish. Its call sounds its own name, and its appearance brings or forecasts fear in the state. The unusual wing comparison is retained rather than silently replacing it with feathered bird wings.

Mount Geng is described as without vegetation and as containing watery mineral resources and large snakes. Those snakes are part of the locality, not an alternative body for Zhuru. The adjacent mountain entries include other fox-like creatures with different wings, tails, and omens. This brief witness identifies Zhuru by the fox-and-fish combination; it does not explain whether the creature flies, swims, transforms, or personally attacks the people who experience the predicted fear.
