Overview

The Zhi of Mount Fuyu is a human-eating beast in the Shanhaijing's second southern itinerary. Its body resembles a tiger, its tail an ox's, and its voice a barking dog's. The name 彘 also has an ordinary meaning of pig, so its mountain locality distinguishes this particular described beast.

The itinerary puts Mount Fuyu five hundred li east of Mount Gouyu, overlooking Juqu to the north and Zhupi to the east. The Tiao River issues from its northern side and flows into Juqu; its fish inventory follows the Zhi. The entry names no individual victim or confrontation, presenting the beast's people-eating character as one feature in this mountain-and-water account.
