Overview
Zamtrios is a quadrupedal Amphibian with shark-like jaws, fins and an unusually changeable body. Its ordinary adult form moves both around icy water and across land, while the smaller Zamite represents the juvenile animal encountered separately. During a hunt, the adult can acquire spiked ice armor or inflate into a much larger rounded shape. These transformations change how much space it occupies and how its movements appear, making the outline itself useful information for the hunter. The armored state emphasizes pointed projections; the inflated state makes bulk and bodily impact much more conspicuous. Neither is catalogued here as a second species or an automatic permanent evolutionary stage. The profile follows the cold-region Zamtrios of Monster Hunter 4 and its expanded international treatment in 4 Ultimate, with quest-specific numerical rules kept outside the ecological account.
Capcom's 2014 feature places development sketches beside named shark comparisons. Basking and frilled sharks contributed different visual inputs, while the ice-coating idea drew on the hard dermal denticles of real sharks. The comparison explains creative choices, rather than claiming a real shark produces freezing liquid or grows a giant balloonlike belly. Zamtrios's limbs and its franchise classification also remain fictional features despite the recognizable aquatic outline. This combination of natural references and invented transformation gives the monster a specific identity beyond a generic giant shark. Japanese players encountered it in Monster Hunter 4 in 2013; the expanded 4G release followed in 2014, with the English 4 Ultimate release in 2015. Tigerstripe Zamtrios belongs to a separately identified subspecies with a different habitat and encounter emphasis, so its desert behavior is not used to describe the ordinary icy-water animal.
First appearances & development
Monster Hunter 4 (2013 Japanese release). This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. Game Hunter's Notes and encounters are the baseline; subspecies, variants, spin-offs and numerical mechanics require title attribution.
Canon & continuity
Released-game encounters provide the creature and behavior context. Named Capcom production statements directly support the identified design inputs; these are creator explanations rather than a fan attribution. The bibliography and links separate game treatment, production history and publisher overview. This bounded comparison does not claim access to complete internal design documents or an exhaustive survey of every quest revision.

Family, evolution & connections
Basking shark
Capcom presents development-team sketches alongside basking shark imagery and explicitly identifies the animal as one input to Zamtrios. It also distinguishes an early, more fish-like design from the finished monster. The connection documents a design source rather than treating Zamtrios’s ice coating and combat behavior as properties of real basking sharks.
Frilled shark
The official design feature juxtaposes a later Zamtrios head concept with a frilled shark’s head, within its account of real shark influences. This supports a bounded anatomical design connection. It does not mean that every feature comes from the frilled shark, nor that the fantasy monster belongs to the animal’s actual evolutionary lineage.
Shark dermal denticles
Capcom directly links Zamtrios’s protective ice coating to shark dermal denticles, presenting real skin structure as a starting point for a fantastic armor mechanic. Smithsonian material describes the ordinary scales and their role in swimming. The invented secreted ice layer is an artistic transformation of that input, not a biological ability demonstrated in real sharks.
