Overview
Yuanhu inhabits Mount Shihu at the opening of the Shanhaijing’s third eastern itinerary. Its body is compared to a large deer, while its eyes resemble those of a fish. Its call repeats its own name. The mountain looks north toward another mountain and contains gold, jade and thorny vegetation. Yuanhu is thus introduced as one resident of a described landscape rather than through a separate adventure.
The fishlike eyes modify a terrestrial deer form. The self-naming cry is a recurring descriptive feature of the collection, but the particular deer-and-fish combination belongs to Yuanhu’s named notice at Mount Shihu.
