Overview

Yiji inhabits Mount Xian in the Shanhaijing. The received description compares its body to a doglike animal, with a red muzzle, red eyes and a white tail. Its appearance foretells fire in the locality.

The mountain has trees, grasses and metal deposits. The red facial features and white tail distinguish this named fire portent from neighboring white-headed creatures associated with warfare.
