Overview

The beast written 㺊 appears in the Central Wilderness section of the Shenyi jing, with a phonetic note giving its reading as Yang. It resembles a lion, eats people, and makes people ill by blowing upon them. It remains close to settlements and enters houses, bringing suffering to the inhabitants. The Heavenly Emperor responds by moving it into the northern wilderness.

This short narrative gives both the creature’s harmful conduct and its removal from human dwellings. It does not supply horns, wings, or a ritual prescription for curing the resulting illness. The lion comparison is anatomical, while sickness by breath belongs to the tale’s supernatural causation. The exact character and source locator are retained because the ordinary romanized syllable alone could refer to unrelated beings. A real lion photograph would not verify the narrative’s supernatural action.
