Overview
Chiguo is a giant in the Southeastern Wilderness section of the Shenyi jing. The account gives him a height of seven zhang, a broad abdomen, red clothing, a pale belt, and a head ornament. A red snake winds around his forehead. He travels throughout the world, swallowing thousands of evil ghosts in the morning and hundreds in the evening. Ghosts serve as his food and dew as his drink.
The passage gives alternative names associated with consuming harmful beings, including Shixie. Its enormous numbers and dimensions belong to the literary representation. They do not document a human ritual specialist’s literal diet. The printed account is retained as a received text with disputed author attribution, rather than securely assigned to Dongfang Shuo. No exact historical illustration has yet been matched to these clothing and serpent details.
