Overview
Xiyou is a giant bird associated with Kunlun’s heaven-reaching copper pillar in the Central Wilderness section of the Shenyi jing. It faces south, extending its left wing over the Eastern King and its right wing over the Western Queen Mother. A vast bare area on its back is described as lacking feathers. The Queen Mother climbs its wing for her yearly meeting with the eastern ruler.
The passage includes an inscription about the bird, saying that it does not call or eat and describing the connection between the rulers. The extraordinary distances and body proportions belong to this cosmic representation. They do not establish a measured species or an ordinary flight route. Xiyou’s role is spatial connection in the narrated divine setting, rather than the predatory carrying of humans associated with some other giant birds.
