Windray (Avatar)

Overview

The windray is a docile air-dweller whose gas ballast works alongside continuous forward movement. Unlike a largely drifting medusoid, its undulating wings provide useful propulsion and purposeful changes of direction. The two creatures consequently have complementary roles in a Tlalim fleet: buoyant medusoids lift the vessels, while windrays pull them along their route. Their shared use of hydrogen does not by itself establish a documented family relationship or identical flight mechanics.

Wind Traders raise windrays from birth and train them to accompany the fleet. Harnessed at a gondola’s bow, an animal is bonded with a navigator who guides it and recognizes fatigue. Resting or feeding creatures can be replaced by others traveling alongside the vessels. When conditions allow, a windray draws its whiskers over the water to attract fish, then catches them with a barbed tongue.

The gondola guide describes a larger crew managing ropes and rigging around this animal-and-navigator partnership. Routes also depend on knowledge of Pandora’s surface and skies, aided by maps and tools; the creature is not described as doing every navigational task alone. The clan’s long circuit carries goods, stories and market exchanges between far-separated communities. That social role explains why maintaining windray health matters to the travelers’ livelihood as well as their immediate flight.
