Overview
The Na'vi are the indigenous humanoid peoples of Pandora in James Cameron's Avatar setting. Tall blue bodies and neural queues make them recognizable, while clan relationships, language and connections to Eywa provide their social context. Joining neural queues with other organisms creates particular bonds; it should not be reduced to ordinary ownership or a universal ability to command all wildlife.
The forest Omatikaya and reef Metkayina demonstrate substantial differences in environment, body adaptations and daily practice. Human conflict also raises questions of land, extraction and belonging rather than simply introducing a battle between species. This entry refers to Cameron's films and companion material, distinct from the unrelated Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise.
First appearances & development
Avatar (2009) introduces the principal screen portrayal of the Na'vi. This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. James Cameron's Pandora setting is intended; films and official companion material are separately identified.
Canon & continuity
Primary basis: Avatar (2009); comparison: Avatar: The Way of Water (2022). The bibliography identifies the relevant fictional treatments, while the linked guide supports identification and context. Exact page references, exhaustive first-appearance research and edition-independent mechanics are outside this profile. The performers’ facial scans and sculptural likenesses
Patton describes adapting generic Na’vi designs to the cast through scanned meshes, digital deformation, printed models and clay resculpting. This concerns the film’s actor-linked avatar faces and production workflow; it does not mean the indigenous Na’vi are descendants of the performers or of human actors within the story.
