Overview
Wampas are large white-furred predators native to Hoth's frozen landscape. Their camouflage and capacity for stealth make them dangerous despite their imposing size. The Empire Strikes Back presents a wampa attacking Luke and his tauntaun, then carrying the injured human into a cave. The creature's lair turns the surrounding cold from scenery into a second part of the survival threat.
Luke's escape and the severing of the animal's arm concern one encounter, not a species-wide historical injury. Later film editions alter what the audience sees of that scene, which matters when comparing visual depictions. The official Databank supplies predation and camouflage details, while the film establishes the narrative event. A resemblance to snow-monster imagery can be noted as comparison, but exact folklore inspiration, reproduction and social organization are not asserted without further evidence.
First appearances & development
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980). Selected released screen works and Lucasfilm's official creature reference establish this profile. Film edition changes, separate individuals and the boundary between current canon and Legends are retained where relevant. The entry does not claim an exhaustive earliest-publication audit across novelizations, merchandise, games and reference books.
Canon & continuity
Lucasfilm's exact Databank entry supplies the creature's identification, selected physical or behavioral traits and screen appearance list. The named film or series provides the narrative example. Short catalogue descriptions do not support a complete invented biology. Episode-specific details, film edition changes and additional Legends material require their own evidence; no extended official text or artwork is reproduced.

Family, evolution & connections
Lions
Ben Burtt describes recording a feeding lion at Olympia Game Farm and reusing its chewing and moaning sounds for the wampa’s feeding scene. This directly documents an animal-recording input to the film soundtrack. It does not identify the animal as a visual model, a fictional ancestor, or the only component of the completed sound.
Elephants
Burtt identifies elephant recordings from Oakland Zoo as ingredients of the wampa’s louder vocalizations. This is a documented sound-production relationship, rather than a biological or design-silhouette comparison. He does not identify the elephant species in this account, so the recording is linked to elephants generally instead of a specific local elephant profile.
