Overview
Volvidon is a fanged beast enclosed in a thick red shell described as resistant to magma. It curls and rolls along the ground, then extends a long tongue whose paralytic saliva helps capture prey. The creature combines a defensive covering with an active means of approach, so the same body structure that protects it also shapes its movement and attacking distance.
Portable 3rd establishes the selected original depiction, and Now's official guide documents a later encounter. In the mobile game it can release gas that causes the stench status, and damage during a rolling attack can interrupt the motion and create an opening. These are qualified encounter properties rather than a universal statement about volcanic animals. The shell and tongue invite comparisons with terrestrial forms, but no particular creator's anatomical source or real chemical mechanism is asserted without primary evidence.
First appearances & development
Introduced in Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (2010, Japan). This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. Game Hunter's Notes and encounters are the baseline; subspecies, variants, spin-offs and numerical mechanics require title attribution.
Canon & continuity
The exact official Monster Hunter Now creature profile directly supports the selected ecology, visible anatomy and mobile encounter behavior. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd provides the other named primary game treatment. Now is an evolving game first released in 2023; this date does not assert that the species appeared at launch. Numerical balance and later variants are not fully surveyed.
