Overview
In XIV’s official Endwalker account, Viera have tall, slender bodies and conspicuous long ears. Traditional forest society follows the Green Word, which forbids outside contact under threat of exile. Village life is matriarchal, while adult males ordinarily live beyond the settlements and guard the surrounding forest. This describes an established homeland arrangement; it does not make every travelling Viera a forest resident or turn the social rule into an inability to live elsewhere.
The official naming guidance distinguishes Rava and Veena homelands: Golmore Jungle and the forests near the Skatay Range. Their shared practices distinguish a name associated with forest life from one adopted abroad, rather than making a forename a reliable clan label. Children commonly receive names not confined to one gender; later changes can express adulthood or a different identity. Names therefore record decisions as well as origins.
Birth-village surnames can be relinquished upon departure. Male forest guardians commonly take a mentor’s surname, with different Rava and Veena conventions. The published system makes training and residence relevant to identity; it does not establish that everyone abroad keeps the same household affiliation. Its March 2022 update adds male naming detail to the original July 2019 guidance.
The wider franchise requires a separate boundary. The publisher identifies XII’s Fran as a Viera sky pirate and retains her distinctive long ears in its official figure description. This supplies an individual example beyond a forest occupation, not a transfer of XIV’s entire naming system into XII. The species reference places the earlier debut in Tactics Advance; the cultural treatment here remains chiefly XIV-specific.
First appearances & development
The species reference identifies Tactics Advance as the original appearance; Nintendo’s official release listing dates that game to 2003. Shadowbringers added playable Viera in XIV in 2019, with playable males added in Endwalker in 2021. Shared terminology across these works does not establish a single unchanged society or identical game mechanics.
Canon & continuity
Complete official naming passages, including the 2022 update, and the relevant Endwalker description were inspected. Actual Shadowbringers HTML supplied its race section, which the simplified reader omitted. Nintendo release metadata and the indexed species reference support debut chronology; the official Fran product text supplies only the narrowly stated XII identity.
