Overview
Tongtong is the pig-shaped creature of Mount Tai in the first eastern itinerary of the Shanhaijing. The account distinguishes it by its possession of a pearl and by a cry that repeats its own name. Mount Tai is introduced as a place with jade above and metal below, while the Huan River emerging there contains water jade. The creature belongs to this mineral-rich landscape.
The pearl-bearing body and self-naming call are the two distinctive features of this brief notice. The Huan River associated with its mountain flows east into the Jiang, continuing the account’s pairing of unusual fauna with rivers and valuable minerals.
