Overview
The original conjurer account describes combining water and air into a defensive simulacrum. Warcraft III similarly presents a substantial watery body that absorbs punishment while attacking enemies at range. Its classic unit description calls this summoned form mindless and recalls its First War use by human conjurers. The accompanying manual account explains that the creature cannot remain in the physical world for long and eventually returns to liquid. These selected summoned representations differ in scope from Warcraft’s wider water-elemental populations, which include independent beings, rulers and allegiances. Calling the archmage’s temporary fighter mindless therefore does not settle the consciousness of every spirit associated with Neptulon.
The Warcraft III implementation provides three levels with different appearances and increasing size; the largest is dark blue. Their duration limits how long they can fight or scout, and spells directed against summoned units can dispel or damage them. The Archmage guide discusses drawing enemy attacks onto a temporary elemental to preserve other troops, showing how its expendable battlefield role shapes play. Later World of Warcraft mage versions change between temporary and persistent companions and subsequently different summoning triggers. Those changes concern a class ability rather than a new animal species. The profile leaves contemporary talent values and exact life spans outside its classic strategy-game baseline.
First appearances & development
Warcraft: Orcs & Humans (1994) includes the conjurer’s water-elemental summon. Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos (2002) restores the role through the archmage, with The Frozen Throne continuing it. The early manual accounts are reference-mediated; later MMO changes demonstrate version differences without replacing the selected original summoned-form definition.
Canon & continuity
The official Water Elemental and Archmage pages directly support the classic summoned body, three visual levels, limited duration, ranged combat and dispelling risk. The specialist Summon Water Elemental article reproduces identified early manual descriptions and records later class changes. No original manual scan or current talent-tree audit is newly claimed.
