Overview

The Strider has a block-shaped body, fine bristles and two long legs. It walks over lava while remaining nonaggressive toward the player, contrasting with many Nether encounters. Away from lava it can turn purple and shiver; water and rain can harm it. Its practical use is transport: a saddle permits riding, and warped fungus on a stick helps direct the mount. The 2023 guide also describes using fungus to attract Striders and encourage breeding, keeping travel and husbandry within the same creature account.

Pearce identifies crossing lava lakes as the mount’s design problem. Its wobble arose accidentally during experiments with Java animation functions and survived because it suited the appearance. String drops were linked to bristles and to Piglin crossbow materials; that development explanation does not document every Piglin as a Strider hunter.

An early version would retract its legs and damage itself away from lava; the released cold response was a less fatal replacement. Pearce notes players voluntarily building warm pools, even without a rule requiring that care. The later guide repeats that testimony, so the two articles are one witness for the discarded idea. Striders can also be transported to suitable Overworld lava, subject to their vulnerability to rain. Neither the harmless demeanor nor the usable saddle establishes telepathic bonds, an exclusive Nether-wide animal category or immunity to every possible attack.

First appearances & development

Striders entered the June 2020 Nether Update. The July 2020 official feature records direct Pearce testimony on traversal, movement and cold-response experiments. The January 2023 menagerie supplies a later breeding and portal-transport witness, while reproducing an older design passage. Early retracting-leg concepts are not separate released creatures or stages in a proven life cycle.

Canon & continuity

Both actual official bodies were inspected. The direct participant source supports lava-crossing intent, wobble development and material context; the later guide supports fungus, breeding and Overworld use. Reproduced testimony is allocated once. Its joking suggestion that a Piglin invented the steering tool is not promoted to historical fact, and unsupported draft weapons are omitted.
