Overview
A spy-fly combines clockwork construction with a dangerous animating spirit. It can pursue a target and return information, continuing as long as the spirit remains within it. Releasing that spirit creates a lethal danger beyond the little mechanism itself. Its insect appearance therefore hides both a spying device and a supernatural threat.
Northern Lights turns the creature into a practical obstacle when Mrs Coulter sends spy-flies after Lyra and one is captured. Keeping it confined makes an enemy's instrument available for a later reversal. The Secret Commonwealth revisits surveillance technology through a smaller version capable of remembering conversations more precisely. These changes belong to particular devices and periods, rather than a natural evolutionary cycle of ordinary flies.
First appearances & development
Northern Lights (1995) introduces the spirit-driven spy-fly, including Farder Coram's explanation in chapter 9. The Secret Commonwealth (2019) revisits smaller and more capable surveillance devices. This is a constructed creature profile: the insectlike body does not by itself make the being a naturally reproducing animal species.
Canon & continuity
The inspected, source-indexed wiki supplies Northern Lights chapter 9 and The Secret Commonwealth chapter 10 as exact primary locators. Its description of later smaller flies is not generalized to all early mechanisms. No detailed engineering design or universal range is inferred, and an imprisoned spirit is distinguished from ordinary insect cognition.
