Sniffer (Minecraft)

Overview

Sniffers connect Minecraft's archaeology system to a living garden. The official guide describes a once-extinct animal whose eggs can be recovered by brushing suspicious sand in warm ocean ruins. Placing an egg starts hatching; moss accelerates the process. The hatchling, called a snifflet, develops into an adult capable of searching the ground for ancient seeds. Recovery therefore proceeds through an object, a young animal and a mature forager, rather than a naturally spawning herd waiting in a contemporary biome.

The released creature uncovers torchflower seeds and pitcher pods. Growing those discoveries turns the animal's behavior into a visible botanical reward, while torchflowers are also used to breed and heal sniffers. This creates a cycle of archaeological recovery, care and further cultivation. The publisher's extinction premise belongs to the fictional world; it does not claim that the same simple process can restore real extinct animals. The guide identifies the sniffer as an herbivore, but does not supply an evolutionary tree or establish it as a dinosaur.

First appearances & development

Minecraft Live's 2022 community vote selected the sniffer, and the Trails & Tales update released in June 2023. The May announcement separates the planned release from Duncan Geere's later July guide. Snifflets and adults are stages of one creature, not separate species added for catalog breadth.

Canon & continuity

The official July menagerie supplies the egg location, moss-assisted hatching, herbivory and plant recovery. The release announcement independently places the animal alongside archaeology in the 1.20 update. These sources support the playable restoration sequence, without explaining precisely when extinction occurred or claiming a documented ancient civilization created the species.
