Overview

Shuhu inhabits Mount Yanzi at the end of the Shanhaijing’s fourth western itinerary. It combines a horse’s body, bird’s wings, a human face and a snake’s tail. It likes to lift people, a behavior that attached commentary understands as taking them up in its embrace.

The mountain also contains turtles, jade and whetstones, and its waters run west toward the sea. Shuhu’s people-lifting behavior is stated alongside the hybrid anatomy, giving it a more particular action than flight alone. Its human face and serpentine tail distinguish it from an ordinary winged horse.
