Overview

Shebishi appears north of the country of the Great People in the Shanhaijing’s Overseas Eastern Regions. Its body is animal-like, its face human, and its ears large. Two blue-green snakes adorn its ears. The text also records an alternative name or wording. The entry identifies a hybrid figure within the sequence of eastern lands without narrating a death scene or explaining the term shi in its name.

The Great Wilderness Eastern Regions describes a named Shebishi spirit with a human face, dog’s ears and an animal body, again wearing two blue-green snakes. The more specific doglike ears should remain attached to that witness. Reading the passages together supports a consistent human-faced animal form and snake ornaments, while preserving the difference between large ears and explicitly canine ears. No predatory behavior is attributed in these descriptions.
