Overview

Shanhui is described at Mount Yuefa in the first northern sequence of the Shanhaijing. Its body resembles a dog and its face is human. It is good at throwing, laughs when it sees people, and moves like wind. The text associates its appearance with great winds across the world of the account.

The phrase about throwing does not name a weapon or specify a victim. It should therefore not become an invented habit of hurling stones at travellers. Likewise, the wind comparison describes movement, while the omen is separately stated; neither establishes a narrated storm-making act. The mountain’s river contains a different fish with chickenlike feet, but those features do not belong to Shanhui. The profile retains the named beast’s anatomy, conduct, speed, and source-attributed omen.
