Sansei, named plate by Toriyama Sekien

Toriyama Sekien (1712–1788); digitized by Smithsonian Libraries · Public domain · Image source

Sansei is named 山精 on a plate in Toriyama Sekien’s Konjaku Gazu Zoku Hyakki. The image shows a shaggy, humanlike mountain creature supporting itself on a single leg. One hand reaches upward beside a steep rock face, while its other arm bends across its body. Long hair streams backward from its head; leaves or leafy material surround its waist. A narrow waterfall and rugged ground place the encounter within a mountainous landscape. Caption label checked at enlarged resolution.

The inscription invokes the Chinese account collection Yongjia ji, rather than presenting the figure as an ordinary animal of Japan. That citation is part of Sekien’s own literary framing; the older work has not been independently collated for this profile. The plate therefore supports a named mountain spirit and a specific illustrated body. It does not establish a uniform oral tradition, a reliable first appearance, or the characteristics of every being called a mountain spirit.
