Overview
Taiwan's Council of Indigenous Peoples (CIP) places Rukai communities in Taitung, Pingtung and Kaohsiung. It groups them into Eastern, Western and lower-three-branch communities, which differ in speech, social institutions and custom. The CIP gives several uncertain explanations for the name Rukai rather than one settled etymology.
Many communities are known for slate architecture. Eastern villages without access to slate built with wood and bamboo instead. Reinforced concrete houses now often keep slate surfaces. Lily ornaments and inherited privileges historically varied by village and social status, and they are not rules for every Rukai person today. Christianity spread in the 1960s and continues to interact with traditional practice. Millet ritual now emphasises reunion and sharing, and a black-rice ritual belongs to Dona specifically.
Linguist Paul Jen-kuei Li recorded Taromak (Tanan) speech during fieldwork in 1970 and 1971. He checked the texts with Te-tz’u Lin in March 1975. The resulting Academia Sinica volume pairs Rukai forms with translations and identifies Budai songs as separate material. The Rukai are among the Indigenous peoples presented by the CIP.
