Rom, the Vacuous Spider

Overview

At Moonside Lake, Rom initially leaves the hunter alone until attacked. Smaller spiders then supply the immediate threat while the larger creature withdraws. Later stages add an arcane blast around Rom, rising projectiles and attacks descending from above; another summoned group complicates close pursuit. The hard heads of Rom and the small spiders resist attacks far better than their bodies, while lightning offers a combat advantage. Their released encounter name connects the smaller forms to Rom without explaining a complete reproductive cycle.

World notes describe the Byrgenwerth spider as concealing rituals, giving the encounter a narrative role beyond guarding a reward. Micolash's prayer invokes what was done for Rom when asking for eyes, but his words are a character's appeal rather than an independently demonstrated account of her entire transformation. Defeating the lake creature advances the revealing of the blood-moon world. The Lower Pthumeru labyrinth provides another Rom encounter and its Root Chalice reward. The shared name does not conclusively identify one individual surviving between realms. Claims that Ebrietas is Rom's mother, or that Rom's title alone proves mindlessness, exceed the selected evidence.

First appearances & development

Rom appears in the released 2015 base game, including its mandatory lake encounter and dungeon counterpart. This profile follows published encounter behaviour and explicit notes and dialogue. It separates what characters say about enlightenment from a fully resolved origin biography; a supposed former scholar is not asserted without a stronger direct witness.

Canon & continuity

The dedicated encounter reference supplies phases, targets and placements. Reproduced world notes establish ritual concealment, while Micolash's released dialogue supplies the attributed appeal concerning Rom. Lower Pthumeru Root Chalice text corroborates the dungeon reward. Neither these texts nor the uninspected guide chapter establishes Rom's parentage.
