Overview

Reefclaws resemble oversized clawed crustaceans and can seize prey with venomous pincers. Their understanding of nearby humanoid speech helps them locate victims and avoid hunters, although they cannot speak themselves. Both selected editions make death dangerous to a nearby attacker: first edition permits a final full attack, while legacy second edition specifies one claw strike.

The later bestiary develops communal broods and coordinated female hunting, including attacks on small boats. Their meat is sold despite the moral problem posed by the creatures' intelligence; some markets push that trade underground. The first-edition account instead describes the breeding male being killed during mating and a different poison sequence. These accounts are retained as edition-specific detail rather than one forced uniform ecology. Reefclaws collect no deliberate treasure, although victims' possessions may still make their lairs dangerous recovery sites.

First appearances & development

The selected first- and second-edition Pathfinder entries identify a recurring coastal predator. The older entry also lists an adventure-path witness, but this profile does not claim that adventure was fully inspected. The creature's intelligence is recognized; priority 2 reflects its predatory role without inventing a civilization or denying moral agency.

Canon & continuity

The licensed entries were inspected for understanding speech, venom, breeding and death-frenzy rules. Their different final attacks and breeding descriptions remain separate. The later meat-trade passage explicitly raises intelligence and moral concern, so the account does not reduce the creature to ordinary seafood or equate it with a real lobster.
