Overview

Rangda is a powerful figure in Balinese ritual performance, often opposed to Barong. The Second Face museum identifies its 2012 mask as Rangda Ing Girah, the widow associated with Calonarang, and describes her vengeance after the refusal of a marriage for her daughter. It also stresses that the mask can be a sacred, protective temple object, even while the performed character leads harmful witch forces.

The Museum Nasional Indonesia describes a 1934 mask through a continuing balance of opposed forces rather than their permanent elimination. A separate UBC mask has a dark-red face, bulging eyes, long teeth and a decorated projecting tongue. UBC presents the proposed connection to the historical queen Mahendradatta as a hypothesis. These descriptions preserve object-specific appearances and differing custodial interpretations rather than treating every Rangda representation as identical.
