Overview

Barong is a protective beast embodied in Balinese masks and performance. The Second Face record for Barong Ket describes temple custody, village protection and a contest with Rangda. It distinguishes several animal forms and treats its ket mask as a composite with tiger and ox attributes. Its named object was made in 2012 by Ida Wayan Tangguh from pule wood with numerous applied materials.

IGNCA describes another Barong Ket as part dragon and part lion, performed by two people within an elaborate animal costume. Its record connects the figure with exorcistic rites, temple ceremonies, annual processions and performances for visitors. The differing animal comparisons belong to these custodial accounts; both establish a composite performed guardian. This Balinese Barong is kept distinct from the East Javanese Singa Barong of Reog.
