Overview
Otaks belong to Earthsea's localized fauna, with the reference account restricting their range to Roke, Ensmer, Pody and Wathort. They are small carnivores with a fierce temperament, and wild animals seldom trust humans. This gives Ged's companion Hoeg a different significance from an automatically assigned wizard's pet. An otak is neither a miniature dragon nor a human spirit wearing fur. Its modest prey and limited island distribution place ordinary animal life beside the archipelago's much more imposing magical powers.
Hoeg accompanies the young mage through a story in which care and attachment can succeed where displays of power fail. Vetch looks after the animal during Ged's recovery. Later, after Ged's dangerous attempt to save a sick child, Hoeg's physical nudging helps bring him back to the living world. Their separation and the discovery of Hoeg's body outside the Court of the Terrenon make the relationship painful rather than decorative. These events concern one otak's bond with Ged; they do not establish that every member of the species can travel between worlds or perform healing magic.
First appearances & development
The documented literary treatment here is A Wizard of Earthsea, originally published by Parnassus Press in 1968. Hoeg is the named individual through whom the animal is most clearly presented. Later collections preserve the novel but are not counted as independent new species appearances, and no earlier magazine debut is inferred.
Canon & continuity
Le Guin's official catalog establishes the novel's date and scope. The Earthsea Wiki's public revision records for Otak and Hoeg supply the animal and companion account; Sean Guynes's publisher-hosted reread independently discusses local fauna. The primary novel is identified precisely, but this task has not newly reread its entire text.
