Overview
A harrekki is a small reptile whose dragon-like appearance fits within Earthsea's everyday animal life. The setting reference places it in the East Reach, and the first novel presents one as a household companion of Vetch's sister, known as Yarrow and by her true name Kest. Its resemblance gives the animal an immediately recognizable place in the world without making it one of the western, speaking dragons. The surviving account here does not supply a fire-breathing attack, an immense lifespan or command of the Language of the Making.
The pet appears within the domestic world Ged encounters while travelling with his friend. Local animals help distinguish islands as living places with households and habits. Sean Guynes's reread explicitly pairs East Reach harrekki with Roke otaks as examples of that geographic specificity. One animal recalls a legendary dragon shape while remaining a small reptile, and another is a fierce furry predator. The inspected witnesses offer little detailed breeding or feeding information, so this account preserves the household appearance and regional distribution.
First appearances & development
A Wizard of Earthsea, published in 1968, is the specific literary appearance documented here. Harrekki is a local animal label, not the name of a separately established human civilization. Its pet context is retained without inventing an earlier publication history or treating later reprints of the same novel as fresh creature variants.
Canon & continuity
The author catalog establishes the novel and its original publication. The setting reference identifies miniature-dragon appearance, eastern distribution and Yarrow's pet; Guynes's reread independently names the regional animal. The creature is described through those limited witnesses rather than supplied with an invented monster stat block or a biological link to the great dragons.
