Overview

Nightwraiths haunt rural places and are most dangerous after dark, presenting a wasted female apparition whose apparent frailty conceals lethal power. In Wild Hunt they remain immaterial much of the time and become tangible briefly when attacking. When weakened, a spirit can create projections through which it drains vitality, making the visible multiplication part of an encounter rather than evidence of a suddenly reproducing population.

The comparison with Noonwraiths is deliberate, but night and day are tendencies rather than perfectly exclusive appearance windows in the third game's bestiary. Yrden and Moon Dust belong to that game's means of exposing a tangible target. This entry identifies the earlier and later game treatments and does not equate every similarly named nocturnal spirit in Sapkowski's writing with every game subtype. A particular contract's dead woman remains an individual story, not the biography of all Nightwraiths.

First appearances & development

The selected version is 2007 and 2015 game. CD Projekt RED's games adapt Sapkowski's setting while adding their own creature designs, quest histories and combat classifications. This profile identifies those game treatments, rather than asserting that every detail originates in the novels. Spellings and named variants remain within the same account unless a substantive independent comparison is required.

Canon & continuity

The Witcher Wiki is an independent reference, and its public MediaWiki API supplied the version-labeled bestiary text and relevant quest accounts. Publisher-hosted Prima guide excerpts provide additional context where listed. The bibliography identifies the actual game or reference chapter; it does not imply a complete audit of every novel, expansion, patch, screen adaptation or full guidebook.
