Overview

The Nightwraith’s four sets of wings carry folding vanes for aerial control. A hollow bony crest serves in hunting, defense and mating interactions, while its hind claws provide another means of striking airborne prey. These are in-world anatomical claims. The field guide’s hawk and falcon comparison describes an attack, rather than documenting an artist’s design process.

Fire and Ash connects a Nightwraith to Varang and the Mangkwan attack on a Wind Trader caravan. The separate Sa’ata guide says Varang and her animal injure Neytiri and her banshee during that encounter, after which Sa’ata finds her rider in the wreckage and carries her to safety. This makes the Nightwraith an active part of the confrontation between clans rather than a generic sky hazard. Varang’s own guide situates her leadership in the Mangkwan’s volcanic catastrophe and subsequent rejection of Eywa, but that political history does not explain the species’ biological origin.

Pandorapedia explicitly calls the Nightwraith a distant tetrapteron relative, supporting a scoped fictional family relationship. It does not establish a complete evolutionary tree. Likewise, Varang’s singular beast is combined with the species profile; it does not prove that every Nightwraith has a rider.
