Overview
The Nez Perce Tribe presents Nimiipuu identity as that of a sovereign nation. Its tribal government operates in north-central Idaho, and its community institutions provide contemporary services.
The Tribe's history describes fishing, hunting and gathering, along with wider travel and trade, and governance through specialized leaders and councils. It traces a reservation set in 1855, reduced in 1863 and later allotted, and states that it continues to assert treaty rights.
The National Park Service preserves Nez Perce-associated sites, stories and artifacts. It attributes to Nez Perce narratives an account of belonging that extends beyond any datable history.
