Overview

The Kiowa Tribe presents itself as a distinct people. Its history records an alliance with the Comanche from around 1790 and an association with the Plains Apache, who remain a separate people.

For the nineteenth century, the Tribe's account centers horses and buffalo, followed by the Medicine Lodge Treaty of 1867, reservation formation and later allotment. These lifeways describe a historical period, not a uniform present-day way of life.

The Tribe's language department preserves language and history, teaches in Anadarko and Carnegie and develops new teachers, while noting that communities use differing spelling systems. The Tribe also explains its seal as linking community art with Rainy Mountain.
