Overview
Mynocks are leathery-winged parasites that inhabit deep space, asteroid fields and damp environments, including the interiors of space slugs. They chew power cables and consume energy conductors, making an infestation a practical danger to starships rather than simply an unpleasant animal encounter. The Empire Strikes Back shows them disturbing the Millennium Falcon crew during a stop whose surrounding cavern proves to be part of a much larger creature.
Lucasfilm's Databank extends the film encounter into guidance about power fluctuations and clearing infestations before departure. That reference supports the recurring parasite concept without supplying a complete reproductive cycle or every licensed-continuity variant. A separate production fact is directly documented: sound designer Ben Burtt identifies reversed horse vocalizations as the basis of the mynocks' shrill calls. This is evidence about the film's audio construction, not a claim that the fictional animal evolved from a horse.
First appearances & development
Introduced in The Empire Strikes Back (1980). This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. Current screen canon is the baseline; Legends expansions are excluded unless explicitly named.
Canon & continuity
The Empire Strikes Back is the original audiovisual narrative basis. Lucasfilm's creature-specific Databank directly documents habitats, cable damage and energy feeding, while Ben Burtt's first-person interview separately verifies the sound effect's animal recording source. The reference is an official primary encyclopedic treatment, not a second independent story; licensed game and Legends elaborations are not fully surveyed.

Family, evolution & connections
Horses
Burtt explains that playing a horse’s whinny backwards provided the mynock vocal effect. The transformation of an everyday recording into an unfamiliar sound is explicitly attested by its creator. This audio connection does not imply equine appearance or anatomy, and it supplies no in-universe parentage or ecological relationship between mynocks and horses.
