Overview
In Ralston’s summary of Khudyakof no. 86, a general must bring back something never seen from a place no one has visited before he can marry a king’s daughter. An old woman in a woodland hut calls Morfei to serve dinner, which immediately appears. She gives the cook to the general with instructions to serve him faithfully. When the traveller meets shipwrecked crews, Morfei supplies excellent food at his command.
The first crew exchanges a magic volume for the cook, but Morfei secretly follows his earlier master rather than remaining with them. A second crew gives a magical sabre and towel in another exchange. The general returns with objects that secure his eligibility to marry. No visible anatomy or sleeping power is supplied for Morfei. Ralston’s parenthetical suggestion of Morpheus and his comparative derivation from returning magical weapons are commentary, not identities or powers established by this narrated food-making role.
