Overview
Dragon Quest's mimic is a hostile chest-shaped monster that exploits the player's expectation of treasure. Opening what seems to be a reward can instead begin a dangerous battle, with the creature revealing its monstrous interior. The surprise turns the familiar act of searching a dungeon into a decision about trust and preparation rather than simple collection.
The mimic is usually more threatening than the related cannibox and often uses magic capable of instantly defeating a party member. Exact spells, resources and encounter setups differ; some games also present it as an ordinary roaming or random enemy. This chest design is distinct from Dungeons & Dragons' broader object-disguising mimic. The shared name supports comparison, but neither game's anatomy, transformation rules or statistics should automatically be transferred to the other.
First appearances & development
Dragon Quest III (1988), Japanese original release. This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. Names, recruitment, spell lists and combat parameters differ between localizations, remakes and spin-offs; this profile describes the recurring design, not one universal stat block.
Canon & continuity
Primary basis: Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation (1988); comparison: Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (2017). The linked reference guide collates released-game appearances and descriptions. Original games, remakes and localized spell names must be checked separately when exact mechanics matter. This entry summarizes recurring design and selected narrative examples without reproducing game text or claiming exhaustive bibliography.
