Overview
This Manman inhabits the Luo River at the end of Mount Gang in the Shanhaijing. It has the body of a mouse and the head of a soft-shelled turtle. Its voice resembles a dog’s bark.
The hybrid belongs to the river’s short fauna notice. It should remain distinct from the paired flying bird called Manman elsewhere in the western itineraries: the shared romanization does not remove the difference between this mouse-and-turtle body and that bird’s form.
