Turtle beside a freshwater basin
AI interpretation; turtle markings, basin and shore imagined.
Overview
Letao and Jemeliwut sail to Bikar seeking their mother Lijebake, who has become the Great Mother Turtle. She brings freshwater in a basin. Jemeliwut refuses its dirty exterior; Letao closes his eyes and drinks.
She gives both sons shell pieces, favouring Letao with shoulder shell and transformative powers. The narrator stresses that power did not bring wisdom or kindness. This mother-and-sons episode differs from Hersha Laneab’s canoe-deception telling.
