Overview

Laneab, a Wotje narrator, describes Letao as both human and an unidentified other being. His polished ironwood canoe has a pandanus sail but no hollow hull. He exchanges it for the chief’s fast vessel; the decoy sinks when pushed from the reef, and attendants rescue the chief.

Pursued afterward, Letao raises the seabed and throws rocks that form an island. At Rongrong, he hides beneath sand with a knee exposed. Pursuers mistake it for driftwood and moor their canoes to it; he releases the ropes and escapes. The story continues in Kiribati.

The Story Project developed with the College of the Marshall Islands. Students gathered and translated interviews, with Newton Lajuan overseeing final edits. Participation was voluntary and narrators could withdraw; some topics remained unshared. This public telling is one selected witness, not unrestricted permission over all Marshallese traditions.
