Overview
Capcom’s creature encyclopedia describes the Licker as a further mutation of a zombified human carrying the T-Virus. Its name comes from the unusually long tongue, coined by Raccoon City police personnel rather than supplied as an original laboratory designation. It has lost sight, but enhanced hearing lets it locate prey and react violently to noise. Tongue and claws give it different attack reaches, while climbing extends the places from which it can approach. An exposed brain and skinless-looking body make its human origin grotesquely visible. The mutation began as an unintended result before its potential led to adoption as a bio-organic weapon.
The original Resident Evil 2 guide describes a quadrupedal attacker that can occupy floors, walls and ceilings, and identifies walking quietly before detection as a way to exploit its blindness. Its police-station appearances include a ceiling drop near a blood pool and an attack through the interrogation-room mirror; these are specific encounter arrangements rather than universal behaviour of every Licker. Capcom also identifies the later Licker β encounter in Resident Evil 5, placing an engineered variation within the continuing weapons programme. The family is grouped here without claiming that every infected person must develop into a Licker or that all game versions share one alert distance. Its combination of mobility and hearing turns ordinary navigation into a question of noise, position and detection.
First appearances & development
The selected early treatment is Resident Evil 2 (1998), with Resident Evil 5 (2009) supplying the later Licker β presentation identified by Capcom. Original-game and remake encounter layouts are distinct. Screen adaptations have their own depictions and are not used to establish the game creature’s universal anatomy or origin.
Canon & continuity
The publisher encyclopedia and Creature Feature directly support human mutation, blindness, hearing, exposed brain and the later variation. The independently inspected original-game guide supplies movement, quiet approach and specific police-station encounters. Its combat suggestions remain tied to that game rather than evidence for a single sensory radius across all appearances.
