Scaled dog-like beast of Mount Li, Qing Shanhaijing manuscript

Anonymous Qing-period artist; Shanhaijing tu, 1644–1911; National Central Library, Taiwan, NCL-08481 · Public domain · Image source

The scaled dog-like creature belongs to the Mount Li passage, which also describes pig-like bristles. The manuscript’s handwritten name is consistent with the uncommon received graph 𤢺; its long green tail and red ears are pictorial choices, not additional anatomy supplied by the text.

Overview

The Mount Li passage first describes the separate cattle-like Xiqu, then the Yongyong River flowing south to the Yi, and then a beast named with the graph 𤢺. It resembles a dog of the type called 獳犬, has scales and bears hair compared with a pig’s bristles. The text supplies no colour, call or encounter. Xiqu’s infant voice and human-eating behaviour do not belong to this subsequent animal. Taiwan’s Ministry of Education dictionary identifies the same graph and exact passage, giving the pronunciation xié. This lexical identification does not establish a modern animal species.
