Overview
The Lethifold has the shape of a thin black cloak and moves along the ground at night. It attacks sleeping people, covers their breathing passages and consumes its prey in bed. The official feature stresses how little evidence it leaves: after feeding, the creature departs thicker than before, with neither a body nor an obvious disturbance remaining. Its cloth-like outline is therefore both an appearance and a means of approaching a victim without resembling an ordinary walking predator.
The bestiary restricts it to the tropics and records Flavius Belby's survival of an attack in Papua New Guinea in 1782. His successful Patronus Charm supplies the known defence in that account, rather than a guarantee that every other spell has been experimentally ruled out. Rowling's Celestina Warbeck biography gives another encounter: the singer's mother is attacked by a Lethifold masquerading as a stage curtain, an incident through which her parents meet. This additional story extends its concealment to theatre scenery without establishing a new curtain species or a relationship to Dementors.
First appearances & development
The selected debut is the 2001 companion bestiary. Its Belby episode has an eighteenth-century fictional setting, which must remain distinct from publication history. Rowling's later online Celestina Warbeck biography supplies an additional disguise and human encounter. No verified date for that online essay's first publication is asserted here.
Canon & continuity
The official creature roundup confirms the shroud form and feeding sequence. The Lexicon identifies the tropical range, Belby's account and its successful defence. Rowling's complete original Warbeck text independently confirms the stage-curtain attack. Similarity of defensive magic does not prove that Lethifolds and Dementors share biological ancestry.
