Overview
Skeat records a Selangor story in which the original Langsuir is a beautiful woman who dies after hearing that her child was stillborn. She claps her hands and flies to a tree. Her green robe, exceptionally long nails and black hair reaching her ankles identify her; the hair conceals a hole behind her neck through which she takes children’s blood. Elsewhere in the same account her embodiment is described as a long-clawed night owl perched on a roof.
The story allows her to be subdued by cutting her nails and hair and stuffing them into the neck opening. She can then become a wife and mother, but dancing at a village celebration causes her to return to her ghostly form and fly into the forest. Skeat also reports an informant’s claim that Langsuir gather on river-mouth fishing stakes to steal fish. Plate7 reproduces a constructed model whose long nails are specifically identified in the caption.
