Overview
Oreste Plath's collected episode follows a married couple who leave a group of prospectors and find a valuable vein. Another member learns of their success, attacks them and kills the husband. Dolores wanders the mountains looking for the murderer, becoming familiar with places containing precious metal. Her revenge eventually changes into pity: she warns prospectors where treasure lies so they will leave it alone, because discovery brings death. The warning protects through the same knowledge that could tempt a miner toward wealth.
A 2019 Andacollo community-memory interview records different explanations. Guillermo Castillo Véliz recalls stories of La Lola crying in the ravines at night, passing where gold lay, dying for love or being the devil's wife. Adults used such accounts to send children to bed early. These remembered alternatives do not all follow Plath's widow plot; their shared landscape joins mineral wealth, dangerous night journeys and uncertainty about the apparition's past.
Origins & earliest records
The national-library record dates the inspected edition of Plath's Geografía del mito y la leyenda chilena to 1983; the selected episode appears on printed p. 151. Castillo's named recollections were published on 5 December 2019 in a collaborative-art residency journal. Both document transmission, without supplying a first oral telling or a universal original identity.
Records & interpretation
Plath's indexed passage supplies the complete short widow-and-vein sequence; the anthology has not been exhaustively read. The cultural-ministry journal records Castillo's own childhood memories and attributes the differing explanations to local storytellers. The profile retains their disagreement and does not import the coffin-dragging or murdered-lover plots found in other uninspected versions.
